According to the Presidential Decree of March 15, 2006, our country was complied with the legislation of other countries – EU members about cremation, so as the burning is no longer prohibited neither for nationals nor for foreign citizens of Greece, who are not subject to the custom of burial because of their religious traditions.
The Articles 1 and 2 of the Presidential Decree state that “cremation is allowed, for both domestic or foreign, whose religious convictions allow the cremation after death’’. A necessary condition for cremation is the prior express statement, without terms or conditions, of the deceased for his relevant desire or a corresponding declaration given by his relatives by blood or by affinity, up to the fourth degree. “
The choice of after death cremation is offered even for our fellow citizens who want an alternative instead of burial.
The burning takes place in the crematorium of Sofia in Bulgaria, where the necessary infrastructure is available (furnace for cremation) and as it is the most advantageous option considering the distance and the price. Moreover, it is possible for a family person to accompany the remains (road transport hearse) without any charge apart from the personal expenses. In case that additional members of the family wish to attend, they could follow the procession by car or by coach or by plane, so as to watch the cremation. The duration is about 1,5- 2 hours.
You will get a receipt for the service to be deposited with the other documents for the collection of the funeral expenses which are provided by the insurance fund of the deceased.
