Memorial Ceremonies

The memorial ceremony is the mystery celebrated in memory and for the repose of the deceased.
The religious memorial has two forms. Whether a trisagion (thrice holy) is chanted at the grave of the deceased, or a short memorial service in the church (parish) at the end the service. Trisagion is chanted in three and nine days from the death of the deceased and the memorial service is chanted in forty days, three and six months as well as in one and three years from his death. Exhumation takes place by that time.

The social status of the memorial is important as the opportunity to honour the memory of the deceased arises for friends and relatives, even to those who couldn’t attend the funeral. The main memorials which are usually operated on a wider social circle are those of 40 days, of one year and three years from the celebration of the funeral.
